This is not just another Sunday. Gifts for Dad that really rock are gifts that make him feel proud. Proud of you? If that's a hard pill to swallow than maybe this a day to redeem yourself a bit.
You want to give Dad something different, something cool. Need a little help?
Okay, that's why I'm here.
What are Dad's interests? Name them.
Fishing, gardening, football, computer, golf, music, cocktails, motorcycle, travel, etc. Now find a gift to match that interest. When searching online be as specific as you can. Instead of typing in your browser "gifts for Dad", try typing in phrases like "gifts for gardeners" or "gifts for music lovers" or "wine gifts and accessories"or "golf gifts online". A search like this will yield more choices in Dad's area of interest.
Personalized mens gifts are fantastic fathers day gifts.
They are also called "engraved" gifts. An example would be this: Suppose your dad loves his garden and he loves to show it off. Ask the neighbors, they'll tell you.Okay, seriously you can get personalized garden stones! Say "Happy Fathers Day Love, Owen. Or "Thanks Dad" Or simply, "I I love You Dad". Imagine the pride he will feel each time he looks at that!
Is your father an older Dad? The garden stones will be much appreciated as well as a small garden statue of his favorite little animal. Want something even better? A solar garden fountain would add a whole new element to his favorite spot in the yard.
Other personalized gifts for men that will "wow" him might be a personalized bar sign for the family room, martini sign, poker sign, Irish pub signs, coasters, wine stoppers, humidor, cufflinks, dog tags, pens, wine or shot glasses, NFL mugs, computer bag, duffle bag, rings, luggage tags, watches, and so much more.
Let's move on. For the "cool" dad who loves football. Did you know you can get grill covers, tank covers, pool floats and lots of accessories with this or his favorite football, baseball, basketball team? I know!
Gifts that rock are also those that are "inclusive". Invite Dad to a special outing. This gift is totally about him and what he loves to do. Resist the temptation and don't make it about what you love to do. I'm talking about a baseball game, a concert, a fishing day, a lobster restaurant, dinner theatre, a play, trip to NYC sightseeing, a hike, a scenic boat ride, parasailing, etc.
Make it count. Just spending time with him this way will make him sit back, smile and say
"It just doesn't get any better than this!"

(Attn: Dads – Here’s What Mom Really Wants!)
1. Take all of the kids out grocery shopping and leave Mom with a quiet, empty house for an hour or so.
Let Mom know that it’s her time to spend however she’d like while the rest of the family is out stocking up on the weekly necessities. You can really make it a mom-treat by putting all of the groceries away too as a part of the deal! It may be hard for Mom to refrain from jumping in, so suggest she go relax in another room until the grocery duties are done!
2. Help the kids make a “Mom & Me” Book to share with Mom.
My younger daughter made this sweet little keepsake for me all on her own recently, chock-full of all of the things she loves about us as a mommy-daughter duo, and it is a hand-drawn memento that I will absolutely cherish always! The home-made equivalent of a Mommy-Oscar!
3. Plan a sweet and simple date night… at home, after the kids are tucked in.
It can be as effortless as a glass of wine on the porch and quiet grown-up conversation with just the two of you or her favorite chick-flick, minus any eye-rolling, head shaking, or other not-so-subtle Dad protests. Even if “An Officer and a Gentleman” for the 15th time since you’ve met doesn’t quite “lift you up where you belong” (O.K., maybe you need to be a girl to recognize that theme song), she’ll be swept off her feet that you are making it all about her for a night!
4. Surprise-clean one of the places where Mom spends a large majority of her time – her mom-mobile.
The key here is to do so while holding your tongue from making any criticisms of the kid-garbage littered throughout (and, yes, a mom’s arms and mind really are too full of other stuff to bring a little in every time she gets out of the car!), or the coffee-to-go stains on the console (not to mention the few misguided coffee-drops that somehow found their way onto the fabric-covered ceiling – Life happens!), or the 501 DVDs that you find everywhere but in the now-empty case where they are meant to be stored, or the piles of toys, books, and tote bags that haven’t quite found their way back into the house yet. Inquiries as to how the car arrived at that “How have you not lost a kid in here?”-state in the first place is a conversation best saved for another time!
Just imagine Mom’s delight when she enters her home-away-from-home on wheels and encounters the unexpected smell of something a little fresher than the eau-de-mashed french fries and sour milk that she’s grown so accustomed to!
5. Treat mom like the VIP she truly is by helping out with the household chores, without being asked.
Tell mom “I love you!” with an unrequested, already-folded basket of laundry! (Better yet - an empty, already-put-away laundry basket!) It’s a simple surprise that’s guaranteed to make Mom smile, and maybe even bring a grateful tear to her eye. Yes, it is THAT big of a deal for her to not have to ask for the help, and instead, receive it unexpectedly!
6. Speaking of gratitude, nothing says thank you like a simple “Thank-you!” (Just like Mom taught us!)
Few things in life are sweeter than a simple, heart-felt acknowledgement of your efforts. Let Mom know how much you all appreciate everything she does each day for everyone else. And, the best part is, it doesn’t cost a thing, while the value to Mom will be more precious than gold!
For a fun, free, easy way to say, “Thanks Mom, you’re doing a great job,” please join us in thanking 10,000 moms by Mother’s Day! Visit http://www.sendamomasmile.com/ to send all of the moms you know and love a well deserved mom-smile and a chance to win a $100 Gift Certificate (redeemable at all of a mom’s favorite stores)!

Charleston has become a favored tourist attraction and destination over the years. Rich with history, sandy beaches, walking tours, ghost tours, carriage rides, galleries, museums, shopping, and of course, fine dining. Charleston has become "one of the South's important culinary capitals."
It has a long list of restaurants and eateries offering a variety of cuisines blended with Charleston's own multicultural heritage. Bocci's has become one of my favorite and for a nice lunch and brew outside on the sidewalk, Southend Brewery. The Pavilion Bar on the rooftop of the Market Pavilion Hotel offers a scenic view of the Market and Charleston Bay at night. The night breeze, the achoholic tease, some light conversation please, are all a part of the experience. No doubt you have your own favorite, but the common fascination is Charleston.
Charleston at one time was not the bustling attraction it is today. Here are some interesting facts you may not know. The Vendue Inn and Rooftop Bar in the lengendary French Quarter was a warehouse. The Magnolias on East Bay Street was a building with its windows knocked out and full of debris before its renovation. Charleston Place and Charleston Grill on Meeting Street was a huge, sandy lot where a JCPenney once stood. Bocci's was built in 1867-1868 by the Molony family and home to Charleston’s first Irish Pub. Hurricane Hugo came calling on Sept. 21, 1989, hammering the Lowcountry with 135-mph winds and washing through downtown with 15 feet of seawater. Since Hugo, Charleston rapidly was transformed into the attraction-destination it is today. Between 1995 and 2000, some 2,600 new hotel rooms opened in Charleston County giving proof of that growth in the travel market.
Cypress, Robert's, Magnolias, SNOB, High Cotton, Grill 225 are just a small sampling from a long list of fine dining Charleston offers to its visitors. What I like is how each establishment utilized the old characteristics of its buildings interior and structure to create the feeling that its heritage was respected and thoughtfully preserved along with a balanced blend of the new. SNOB, Post and Courier's "Restaurant of the Year" 2006, did not get that name because it is uppity and presumptuous. The service is friendly and top notch. It is the acronym for Slightly North of Broad.
SNOB features an open kitchen, but don't be dissappointed if you don't get a table with a view, the food is all the same. Award-winning executive chef Frank Lee and his staff's use of local and seasonal ingredients make the Maverick brand of southern cooking what you will come to love and bring you back time and time again.
If you read the reviews on SNOB the majority are upbeat and positive spattered with a few negatives. C'est la vie, you can't please everyone, and let's face the facts, not all palates are the same. Oh, by-the-way, SNOB was an old 19th century warehouse. Location: 192 East Bay Street, Charleston, SC. Also, try High Cotton and Old Village Post House. Bon appetit. The first beach I went to when I visited here was on the Isle of Palms or IOP. As you approach the island via the connector you get a impressive view from the bridge of the back waters and the ocean straight ahead. Finding a parking spot on Ocean Blvd by the pier is a challenge on a sunny, warm summer day when everyone has the same idea as you, going to the beach. The park lot fills up fast also. Suggestion, get there early.
The area by the pier near Coconut Joe's has always been my favorite. When not taking in the rays there are alot of little shops in that section to peruse and a couple of places to get a refreshment or an ice cream cone. If you desire a brew, go to the upper deck of Coconut Joe's. There is generally live music and a beautiful view of the beach and ocean. An even better time is towards the evening when the sun is going down.
IOP was originally named Hunting Island and then Long Island. It was purchased in 1899 by J.S. Lawrence, who renamed it the Isle of Palms. Seewwee Indians originally occuppied the island and the only other occupants were the pirates who buried their treasures for safekeeping in the deserted dunes and woods. It remained without permanent inhabitants until the late 19th century when the island became recognized by locals of the area as a refuge from the summer heat and tempo of Charleston. Breach Inlet, separating IOP and Sullivan's Island, was the point of departure for the CSS Hunley, the first submarine to sink an enemy vessel. Numerous ships have sunk off the shores of its beach and during Hugo the barrier island was under water. The Isle of Palms Beach and Racquet Club was built in 1975 and later renamed The Wild Dunes Beach and Racquet Club in 1984 and today is simply called Wild Dunes.
Vacation home rentals on the beach are plenty and spacious from condos to cottages, to oceanfront mansions. There are five different hotels and resorts on the island to choose from when looking for accommodations for a night or several. If you like water sports, the IOP Marina has everything you need and fishing charters too. We rented kayaks at the marina and paddled around the intercoastal waters of the island. You get a good look at the villas and mansions along the waterways and a enjoyable dose of nature.
Wild Dunes, Charleston's Island Resort, is a 1,600-acre oceanfront paradise that features championship golf, nationally ranked tennis, one of the nation's top-ranked family recreation programs, over two miles of pristine beach, and four outstanding resort restaurants. Whether you are a resident or a non-resident, check out the IOP and its seven miles of beach. Map and location.-Vacation Rick Travel

If you are looking for an unusual place to vacation and checking out accommodations think Long Beach, CA and the Queen Mary. This is a cruise ship that never leaves port, so you don't have to worry about getting sea sick. The reason, this vintage ship has been permanently moored in Long Beach since 1967 and was turned into a floating hotel. The ship is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In World War II it was called the "Grey Ghost" and Winston Churchhill stayed on board.
The Queen Mary has 314 staterooms that have been converted into modern guestrooms, but if you want to experience a bit of the past glory of the ship there are suites that retain their original Art Deco ambiance. There are six different award winning restaurants, cafes, and bars on board with views of the ocean and city skyline. The Sir Winston, a five star restaurant, is known for great service and creative cuisine. The Observation Bar is a Southern California landmark with lively entertainment. The Grand Salon, the ship's original first-class dining room, has a special Sunday Brunch. Tibbies Cabaret offers delicious cuisine along with a critically-acclaimed, "Broadway-Cabaret" style show.
Ship attractions include historical tours, and for some scary fun, ghost tours, because the ship has a haunting dark side to its past. Haunted Encounters Tour takes you on a guided tour of the ship's most haunted areas while the tour guide reveals the stories of the Queen Mary's most famous reported ghosts. Queen Mary also has a interactive special effects show called Ghosts & Legends featuring spooky animations of the ship's haunted past. Increase the mystery and fun by taking the nighttime tours.
Since you can leave the ship at your leisure take time and explore the city of Long Beach with its many attractions. Aquarium of the Pacific, Downtown Shoreline Marina and Village, the Pike at Rainbow Harbor are featured places to explore with entertainment, shopping, and restaurants. Long Beach is a bicycle friendly city where you and your family can explore the waterfront and city by bike. Check out Bike Long Beach for biking fun. Upcoming events of notice include the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, which takes place April 16-18, 2010. The 15th Annual All Toyotafest is scheduled for May 8, 2010. STRESS MANAGEMENT
Facts About Stress:
· Stress-related disorders are fast becoming the most prevalent reason for worker disability according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
· Job stress and related problems cost American companies an estimated $200 billion or more annually through absenteeism, turnover, accidents, etc.
· The World Health Organization calls job stress a "worldwide epidemic."
· 40 million Americans take antidepressant drugs daily!!!
· After the death of a spouse, the average life span of the surviving spouse is one year.
· Stress destroys the immune system, and ruins health to destroy lives.
Stress Management Techniques
1. In with the Good Air, Out with the Bad
Take a breathing break. Frequent short breaks during the day allow you to breathe deeply and relax your mind, preventing stress build-up.
2. Know the Enemy
What, exactly, is stressing you out? Is it your job? Your home life? Your relationships? Without knowing the root of the problem, you are unlikely to resolve it
3. Move It or Lose It
Begin an exercise program. Exercise helps release endorphins, which relieves stress.
4. Let Go
Recognize the difference between the things you can control and the things you cannot. Make a list of these two categories. Starting today, make a pact with yourself to stop stressing about the things in your job you have no control over.
5. Beware of the To Do List
Take note of all the good work you do and give yourself credit for it. Set short-term goals and allow yourself to take satisfaction in achieving them. Most people have too many long term goals, and have too many things on their minds at the same time.
6. Develop a Tough Skin
Try not to personalize any criticism you receive. Look at negative comments as constructive criticism that allows you to improve your work. “Who cares what other people think?”
7. Share the Load
Delegate or share work whenever possible. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you are the only person who can do the job right. Your coworkers and boss might start to buy into that concept as well.
8. Don’t Make Work a Four Letter Word.
Job stress builds when our minds are constantly focused on work. Strive for balance in your life. Make time for family, friends, hobbies and, most importantly, fun.
9. Get Adjusted.
Your nervous system is how your body deals with stress! The easier it is for your body to deal with stress, the less of a deal it will seem to be!

We were looking to do a scary nighttime tour in Charleston one day, so we called Bulldog Tours for some input. Their suggestion was the Haunted Jail Tour. It housed some of Charleston's most infamous criminals, 19th century pirates, and Civil War prisoners. We decided upon the 10 PM tour and were given directions on how to get there.
The weather was perfect and the atmosphere was just right with a slight bit of a haze in the air, no wind blowing, and a dark sky. We took some pictures of the outside of the Old City Jail while waiting for the tour to begin. The weather worn brick and age stressed structure crumbling in random places set the mood for the stories to come.
The tour began outside centered around the buildings history and executions by hanging. We entered the building through an old creeky and rusty iron door. The guide talked about the high death rate among the inmates because of the living conditions, disease, and sweltering summer heat. The story about one of the heavy doors flying off its hinges and almost hitting a guide in my estimation was a bit of a stretch. At one point the lights are turned off while the guide told the story about one of its only female inmates. You will have to do the tour to the find out the moral and climax of that story. The guide also talked about the steps leading to the upper floor. In some areas of the Old City Jail there were a few reminders of the present, such as ladders and paint cans from some current restoration that somewhat diminished the eerie aspect of the jail.
It takes alot to scare me because I don't believe in ghosts, although the old House on Haunted Hill movie really frightened me. So, how would I answer the question as to whether it was truly scary? I will decline and leave it up to your judgement after you have taken the tour. It is one of the many historical tours offered in Charleston and is billed as one of the scariest. The Old City Jail's imposing structure and aged condition makes for some good pictures and, if you free your imagination, you will be entertained. It is definately not a tour to take little children on.
Old City Jail is located at 21 Magazine St, Charleston, SC. Bulldog Tours is located at 40 North Market St, Charleston, SC or call 843-722-8687.-Vacation Rick Travel

Winter has finally ended. Thank goodness for that little bit of revelation.Thinking about spring and a close destination you can take in for that long weekend getaway, think Asheville, NC. Asheville pops up on national rankings for a variety of things: Modern Maturity named it one of "The 50 Most Alive Places To Be," Self magazine labeled it the "Happiest City for Women," it is one of AARP Magazine's "Best Places to Reinvent Your Life," and was proclaimed the "New Freak Capital of the U.S." by Rolling Stone. In the 2008 book The Geography of Bliss, by Eric Weiner, Asheville was cited by the author to be one of the happiest places in the United States. What makes Asheville the happiest place for women and the United States? Read the articles or just go there yourself and find out.
It has been a long winter and many of us have been anxious to get on with spring's warmer temperatures. Of course, warmer temperatures mean more sun, and more sun brings more fun. It also brings the flowers to bloom and Asheville is an excellent place to observe the spring awakening. The Western North Carolina area is blessed with a variety of elevations and terrain containing a variety of plants, trees and shrubs in and around Asheville. It is also home to the Biltmore Estate with its beautiful gardens and Grandfather Mountain where the majority of the spring bloom appears at various times through the season.
This is a list of when and what to look for on your visit. March: Iris, Crocus, Narcissus "Daffodil", Yellow Violet, Spring Beauty, and Dutchman's Breeches. April: Phacelia, Cersis "Redbud", Yellow Lady, Rhododendron, Pink Lady, and Painted Trillium. May: Tulip, Violet, Dogwood, Trailing Arbutus, Mountain Laurel, Flame Azalia, Mountain Magnolia, Wild Cherry, Japonica, Trillium, Crab Apple, and Pinkshell Azalia. If you are like me and don't know a Phacelia from a Cersis "Redbud" take the opportunity to do some research, and if you don't have the time, just go and enjoy it first hand.
Aside from flowers blooming, Asheville comes to life with spring activity. It is at the doorstep of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which is the most visited national park in the United States. Hiking, fishing, swimming, tubing, rafting, horseback riding, and a host of other outdoor activity is available. Named a must-see destination in 2007 by Frommer's, it boasts a thriving arts community, a vibrant and inviting downtown, numerous historic and architectural attractions, and unique shopping options. Restaurants and dining are plentiful featuring all cuisines. Many restaurants also feature live music from jazz to bluegrass. A guided walking tour called Food Tours is offered. Also named one of the top 24 cities in the world for drinking beer! A great place to stay is the Grove Park Inn Resort and Spa overlooking Asheville. Don't give it another thought, take the trip.-Vacation Rick Travel

Mt. Pleasant SC’s, Pinckney Elementary School, was turned into a highly competitive racing arena this weekend. It was the Cub Scouts annual Pinewood Derby race. One of the Scouts largest events every year. Moms and Dads, mostly Dads lets face it, work very hard along side their scout every year to build the fasted derby car with the best design or paint job.
This event was started in 1953 by Don Murphy. Murphy’s son was to young to participate in the Soap Box Derby, so he came up with the idea of racing miniature wood cars. The cars had the same gravity-powered concept as the Box cars, but were smaller and were not raced by the scout. By 1955 the pinewood derby was part of the official Cub Scouting program and, while always optional, has become a key part of many Cub Scout packs’ annual programs.
It is easy to see why the event has become so popular.
Flash ahead fifty-seven years to Charleston, SC and you will see the same principles and excitement of yesteryears. The Cub Scouts in pack 505 range from six to ten years old and are categorized by Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Weblo Scouts. Each group races against each other and then the winners advance to the final round. It is a lot harder done than said. Each scout receives the same block of wood, axel, and four wheels. The most difficult challenge after the actual car design, which takes some intense carving and shaving, is to find the exact balance of weight without butchering the cars. Cars can’t weigh over 5.0 ounces and those weighing under that don’t have much of a chance. The scouts have to be very creative as well with securing axels and gloss finishes, sticker placement, and unique names. Some of the favorites this year were Blue Thunder, Orange Crush, The dragon Claw, & Shake and Bake.
A casual observer might pick up on a few details in the all day event. One is the camaraderie among the scouts. They genuinely encourage each other and have fun no matter who is winning. Also, the scouts seem to always use their events to serve the community or those in need. This year a bake sale was added to the Derby to raise money for the victims of the Haiti earthquake. Publix manager, James Bongalis, the 1971 winner of Pinewood Derby, was there serving ice cream to help in those efforts, along with donations from Joey Bag of Donuts and Pizza Hut.
Many parents have their children in sporting events year round and as that is a great advantage for children to build self esteem and even achieve scholarships, there is something very pure about the Cub Scouts. The purpose of the Pinewood Derby event is to help the Cub Scout build a team relationship with their parent or helper, experience the sense of accomplishment and the excitement of competition, learn good sportsmanship, and to have fun
One of the 3 top goals set for the Derby race is “Family Understanding.”
Building a pinewood derby car puts the boy and his mom, dad, or other adult partner into a close and sometimes intense learning experience over, potentially, many hours.
Second, “Personal Achievement,” which comes to any boy who picks up a woodworking tool and shapes raw wood into a sleek design.
And of course “Sportsmanship and good citizenship” is high priority and is taught by following the derby rules and cheering on friends and den partners as they race against others in the pack.
Congratulations to this years winners. Evan Myers, a Tiger Scout, took home first place. Daniel Reinhart, a wolf Scout placed second. Remington Hough, a Webelo, received third place. Riely turcotte, another Wolf Scout, placed fourth.

We get a lot of questions about schools in Charleston, SC – especially from home buyers relocating to Charleston. When clients tell us they want to be in a good public school district, we give them some of the resources we’ve collected over the years. Most of these are school district websites along with various sites devoted to school rankings for the Charleston area and for the state.
The cities of Mt. Pleasant and Summerville have the highest ranked public schools in Charleston. Summerville is divided into several districts. But, if you look at the rankings, you’ll see that Dorchester District 2 receives the highest marks.
When people find out they have two options for places to live in Charleston with such good public schools, they usually want to narrow their search even more. So, the main differences between these two areas are price and location. Mt. Pleasant is more expensive than Summerville, since most areas in Mt. Pleasant are about 10 minutes from the beaches and about 15-20 minutes from downtown Charleston. So, Mt. Pleasant has a much better location than Summerville. Also, Mt. Pleasant has more of an upscale feel to it. There is plenty to do in Mt. Pleasant – it has a nice outdoor shopping mall (Towne Center), along with a lot of restaurants and a movie theater.
If you’re looking to spend less than $250K for a single family home, I would recommend looking in Summerville. The homes in Summerville are more affordable compared to some of the other Charleston areas. Summerville is about 40 to 45 minutes from downtown Charleston and a good hour's drive from the closest beach. Summerville has a small-town feel to it, but there are still quite a few restaurants and stores in the area. So, Summerville residents don’t have to leave town for entertainment. But, if they want to go downtown Charleston or to the beach, it’s just a short drive away.
James Island also has good schools – from their elementary schools up to their Charter high school. Also, Academic Magnet High School in North Charleston was ranked 7th in the country for public schools. Students have to apply to get into Academic Magnet, and it is quite competitive. But, the good news is that home buyers have plenty of options for good public schools in Charleston.
Charleston also has excellent private schools. Bishop England High School, Ashley Hall, and Porter-Gaud are just a handful of options for private schools in Charleston.
Home buyers will find a lot of good information available on schools, so it’s important for buyers to not just rely on what we say – but to also look for themselves. If schools are a deciding factor in your home purchase, be sure to confirm any information that you get. Most buyers are pleased to see for themselves the many options available for schools in Charleston.
About the Author: You’ll find some of our resources on the Schools page of our website. Buyers can also view all Charleston homes for sale on the MLS using our website! Whether you’re looking for Mt. Pleasant, SC homes or Summerville real estate, you’ll find all the listings on our site!
