Plenty of bands start out with bluegrass instrumentation, then move on to electric mandolins, drums, and, finally, pop songs. Greensky puts the bluegrass in their name, so despite an affinity for covering Pink Floyd (“Time”) and the Beatles (“A Day in the Life”), they still manage to keep it traditional. The Kalamazoo, Mich., quintet consists of Anders Beck (dobro), Michael Arlen Bont (banjo), Dave Bruzza (guitar), Mike Devol (bass), and Paul Hoffman (mandolin). Although they won the Telluride Bluegrass Festival band contest in 2006 and garnered praise from bands like Leftover Salmon and Yonder Mountain String Band, they’re still the type of guys who don’t hesitate to don a gorilla suit and play a “guerilla” show until well after sunrise, as they did at this summer’s All Good Festival in West Virginia. Their Pour House performance is the Green Fair’s pre-party. These Midwesterners most likely won’t sport the suits you’ll see the Steep Canyon Rangers in on Sunday, but you can expect chops faster than Barry Sanders breaking the line.
