(ARA) - Gardening is becoming more popular than ever, thanks to a number of converging circumstances, including the First Lady's planting of a White House organic garden. Because of the sagging economy, people want to save money anywhere they can, and vegetable gardening is a great way to save money on foods that can be costly. Additionally, more and more people want to live a "green" lifestyle, and you can't get more local than picking vegetables right in your back yard. Plus, when you start an organic garden, it's even more environmentally friendly.

When you start on your way to growing healthy garden fruits and vegetables, keep in mind that tending an organic garden has special requirements and poses some different challenges than conventional gardens do. However, the increased popularity of organic gardening has led to some great innovative products that can help you maintain your plot without adding harmful chemicals.

Whether you live within city limits or in a more bucolic setting, it's always fun to see wildlife - just not when they're munching on your zucchini or stealing your strawberries. For most organic gardeners, the goal is to get rid of overly curious garden guests, but without forcing them to ingest poisons or other chemicals that can hurt them.

One of the most trusted ways to keep a strictly organic garden free from unwelcome animal browsers is with the Swedish-developed, garden pest repellent Plantskydd (pronounced "plant-skid" - a Swedish word meaning "plant-protection"). Sweden's reputation as a rigorously green-minded country comes through in these non-toxic repellents, which were the first deer and rabbit repellents to be listed by the USDA-approved Organic Material Review Institute (OMRI), as "suitable for use in the production of food and fiber." Plantskydd's 100 percent organic ingredients make it safe to use around pets and children, but it's also effective in that it won't wash away in the rain, giving your garden longer-lasting protection.

Claude Boisvert, president of Tree World Plant Care Products, Inc., says Plantskydd does double duty as a garden pest repellent and fertilizer. "Because it's a blood meal-derived product, it provides the nutrients necessary for plants to grow strong and produce abundantly, in addition to repelling garden pests like deer and rabbits," Boisvert says. "It's been lauded for its repelling effectiveness by forestry experts, the National Home Gardening Club, as well as soil and water conservation districts throughout the United States."

Other ways to protect your garden include putting netting over the plants that birds, rabbits and other critters favor. Look for netting with small holes that you can spread over strawberry patches, or wire that you can circle around delicate vegetables.

When selecting solutions for feeding or protecting your garden, be sure to do your research and find out the true certification status of products you buy. As the move toward growing one's own organic food becomes mainstream, some repellent manufacturers, who use non-certified ingredients, use terms such as "all natural," or "environment friendly" on package labels in an attempt to associate their products with this "organic" trend. OMRI continues to be a good resource for learning about which products are truly safe and organic.

If you're concerned about your family's health and that of the planet, planting an organic garden is the way to go. You'll not only be able to harvest delicious, nutritive foods right in your backyard, but you'll also be doing your part to foster a healthier environment.

The Top Stress Busters

There are several different types of stress, and learning how to control them can make all the difference. You have physical stress (lack of exercise, illness, sleep habits, etc.), mental stress (how you deal emotionally with life) and chemical stress (nutritional and environmental). Here are a few straightforward ways to help you reduce all three stress factors.
Proper Breathing: Proper breathing has a dramatic impact on muscle relaxation, tension reduction, normalizing heart rate, and increasing mental clarity. What you want to strive for is learning to breathe mostly with your diaphragm instead of your lungs. The diaphragm is the most efficient muscle for breathing. It is a large, dome-shaped muscle located at the base of the lungs. Learning how to breathe with your diaphragm takes some practice, but in time it will become second nature.
Practice the following technique on a daily basis for 5-10 minutes. Lie on your back, putting a pillow or similar support under your knees to relax your lower back. Place one hand on your abdomen and the other on your chest. Slowly inhale through your nose and make sure the only hand that moves is the one on your abdomen. Try to keep the hand on your chest as still as possible. Exhale through pursed lips and repeat.

Organization: Are you feeling overwhelmed with so much to do and so little time? Unclutter your life and get organized to take back control. Where do you start? You've got to have a plan. Create a list of the five most important tasks you need to complete for the day. Put the one you want to do the least at the top of the list to help prevent procrastination. It is human nature to delay things that make you feel uncomfortable. By accomplishing the difficult task first you set the tone for positive action and motivation the rest of the day.

Healthy Snacking: Eat healthy and eat often to control blood sugar levels. When you go long periods between meals, a hormone known as insulin spikes. This hormone controls how fast sugar enters your bloodstream after eating. Big surges in insulin occur when you wait too long between meals, which may increase stress on your body chemistry. You can get cravings and mood swings. Eating only three meals a day is insufficient for keeping this delicate balance of hormones in check. It is recommended that in addition to eating three regular meals a day, you mix in 2-3 healthy snacks. You will notice a renewed sense of energy and vitality as you provide your body and mind with the nutrition it needs.

Exercising: Get in shape and get out of stress; now there's a win-win proposition. Find an exercise you truly enjoy doing, not one you dread. Once you make it a part of your daily routine, it will become an integral part of your healthy lifestyle. Strive to get 20 minutes a day of some type of exercise. Walking is a great way to start. Get outside and enjoy the open air while at the same time clearing your mind. It can be an escape from all the chaos in your life. There is nothing like the calming effect of being around Mother Nature. Excess weight is also a stress on your body; regular exercise will help eliminate the pounds, improving your looks, your health and your state of mind.

Finding "Me Time": Take some solo time every morning before you start the day. Use this time to reflect on yesterday and plan out today's events. Set your alarm 15 minutes early and wake up to silence. Do not turn on the television or open the newspaper. You may find that problems which have plagued you suddenly become more manageable and put into perspective. When was the last time you sat in a room without white noise all around? Try it and see what happens. I have a feeling you will find it to be one of the most enjoyable moments of your day.
Try these stress busters for just one month and you can change your life. Even if you can't do all of them, start with a few and see how much less stress you have in your life.

The Wheat and Dairy Allergy and Disease Connection

How does gluten (wheat) and casein (dairy) affect my child? I have been asked this question a plethora of times.  Let’s take a closer look at the situation.  Have you ever taken an opioid or prescription pain killer?  Whether pre- or post- surgery, due to chronic pain, or a broken bone, these drugs tend to cause a mix of euphoria, lethargy and clouded brain function / hallucinogenic thought.  If your child / children test positive for a gluten or casein allergy (or both), their bodies are unable to break down these foods.  A casein allergy indicates incomplete breakdown of milk, while a gluten allergy is directly linked to an inability to break down wheat or cereal products.

The incomplete breakdown of wheat, milk, or both turns the partially digested food into peptides.  When the peptides mix with stomach enzymes, they produce opioid peptides.  Gluten peptides are known as gluteomorphins.  Casein peptides are known as casomorphins.  At this point, the gluteomorphin and casomorphin in the system will either enter the urine or permeate the blood brain barrier.  If they reach the brain, they will ‘fit into’ an opioid receptor sites and mimic a hallucinogenic drug.  The peptides will alter the nervous and immune systems as well.

Long story short, a piece of cheese pizza could replicate an opioid drug when consumed.  Imagine standing in front of your child watching them consume a prescription pain pill.  It’s not a ‘warn fuzzy’ thought.

Prior to making any dietary alteration, its imperative you meet with a physician and test for food allergies.  It’s not a given that all autistic children have food allergies.  Based on my experience, a very high percentage will test positive for at least gluten, casein or soy.  Some parents are able to strictly adhere to the diet.

I have counseled a tremendous amount of parents with newly diagnosed autistic children.  Based on my follow up, the GF/CF (and sometimes soy free) diet has been beneficial.  GF/CF foods have dramatically improved.  From your local supermarket to specialized markets like Whole Foods to a wide variety of internet sites, GF/CF foods are widely available.

Kid Chiropractic
Children and babies can suffer from neck pain, low back pain and headaches. Chiropractic adjustments offer a safe and effective way to help children feel better.
Many people simply do not know how much of difference Chiropractic adjustments can make to an infant or child’s health because infants and toddlers are usually unable say that their necks or low backs are hurting. When a child is old enough to tell an adult about his or her neck or back pain, it can easily be dismissed because many people find it hard to believe that a child could feel back pain like an adult does. Actually, they can and they do. The truth is that Chiropractic adjustments can easily treat the ailments of many infants and children.

Chiropractic for Babies

The birth process can be very traumatic to an infant, especially if the baby’s head and neck are pulled in any way during labour and birth. One easy method to tell if a baby’s neck is misaligned is to watch where he or she looks in a car seat. If the baby constantly looks in the same direction, the vertebrae in his or her neck are most likely fixed (the chiropractic term is subluxated). Subluxated vertebrae can often be irritated or sore and an adjustment will help those joints to move in a more normal range of motion, while reducing the discomfort that the baby experiences.

Colicky babies find great relief with Chiropractic adjustments. A Denmark study (Klougart N, Nilsson N, Jacobsen J. Infantile colic treated by chiropractors: a prospective study of 316 cases. J Manip Physiol Ther 1989; 12(4): 281-8) showed that 94% of the infants who received chiropractic care noted a significant decrease of crying time within two weeks of treatment.

As babies grow, and learn to crawl and walk, their spines are modified by their newly acquired body positions and by gravity. It is important to have a child’s spine checked at the major milestones of development, especially at the crawling and walking stages to ensure that the vertebrae are all moving in a normal pattern of motion.

Chiropractic for Toddlers

Another concern for Chiropractors with regards to children are bumps and falls. As babies learn to navigate their bodies in space, they fall frequently, and these jolts can cause misalignments in their spine. Anatomically, the spinal cord is housed by the vertebrae, and nerves exit in pairs from between each vertebra. When the vertebrae are out of alignment, they press on the nerves as they exit the spine. The result is that the nervous system is not able to function as well as it could.

Chiropractic for Children

Sports, especially contact sports can cause back or neck pain for children. Heading the ball when playing soccer, sliding into the boards head first in hockey, being hit by the ball or by other players in baseball or basketball can all cause misalignments in a child’s spine. Chiropractors can make the most difference the earlier they treat a child who has hurt his or her neck or back.

Children can suffer from migraine headaches. While Chiropractic care cannot help all types of migraines, some migraine headaches originate from fixed or subluxated vertebrae in the neck. Adjustments can help to reduce or eliminate the frequency and intensity of these types of migraine headaches.

Children can suffer from neck and low back pain if their backpacks are worn improperly or if they are carrying too much weight for their body size.

In Conclusion

It is very important that a child’s spine grows in proper alignment. If your baby seems uncomfortable or consistently refuses to look in one direction, please have his or her spine checked. If you child has had a fall, plays contact sports, or complains about neck or back pain, please consult with a Chiropractor. It can make a such a world of difference to your child’s health.

It's important for every dog owner to recognize dog health problems and symptoms as your furry pal relies on you to be his or her "first responder" when they have a problem.  You can tell when they aren't feeling all that well but do you really know what to do?  Listed below are the symptoms for some common dog health problems ranging from the everyday to the very serious.

Dog Diarrhea

The symptoms of this condition are pretty obvious.  Your canine buddy is probably going to express some pain when defecating because that strain is just magnifying the pain in his stomach.  The stool will be runny and may be an abnormal color.  The odor will be more intense.

Diarrhea in dogs is quite common thanks to a dog's complete lack of discrimination in what he eats.  If it smells okay and doesn't hurt his mouth then it is potential food.  As a result they eat stuff that makes them sick.

Symptoms Of Lyme Disease In Dogs

Lyme disease is a bacterium known as Borrelia which is transmitted to your dog through a tick bite.  Unfortunately, there are no symptoms until weeks after the infection and when they do show they are often mistaken for other ailments.

The most common symptom is one that appears to be arthritis.  Joints and lymph glands can become swollen making it very painful for the dog to walk or even get comfortable laying down.  Your pal will become listless, may refuse to eat because the effort hurts too much, and may revert to using the inside of the house as his bathroom rather than going outside.

The giveaway that this is Lyme's and not arthritis is that the affected limbs will change.  When arthritis develops it doesn't move around.  With Lyme's disease one side of your dog can be affected one week and then suddenly it heals and the other side is affected.

Symptoms of Distemper

Distemper is an airborne virus that is highly contagious and affects the dog's respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems.  Distemper will first show itself with cold like symptoms with watery eyes, runny nose, a cough and sometimes diarrhea.  Later in the development of the disease the dog will suffer from disorientation, twitching and even convulsions.  Unfortunately there is no effective treatment for this disease.

Symptoms of Ear Infections

These infections are fairly common particularly with dogs that have heavy earflap like Bassets and Dachshunds.  The infection is caused by bacteria or yeast that appear when there is a change in the dog's ear like an infestation of ticks or mites.  Symptoms of an ear infection include the shaking of the head, a pawing of the ears, pain and a foul odor coming from the ears.

Of course there are many more ailments that can affect your canine friend but the thing to remember is prevention.  It's really not so different from taking care of a kid.  Keep their shots up to date, keep them well fed and clean and provide clean bedding.  Parasites cause most of the problems and if you can limit your dog's exposure to strange dogs you are limiting the possibility of exposure to disease.  If you notice dog health problems that do not go away after a few days, take your pal to the vet.

Quote:“The only people you need in your life are the ones that need you in theirs.”
Word
: perpend: to ponder; deliberate; to be attentive; reflect

Let us each ponder the probity of global harmony. Might we perpend that tranquility can be more than a theory?”

Did you know?

In a study of more than 3,200 women, those who drank two or more servings per day of artificially sweetened soda had a 30 percent decline in kidney function, say Harvard Medical School scientists. The women who swigged down regular soda had no such decline, so researchers believe that artificial sweeteners are a possible culprit.  There’s no need to deprive yourself completely—drinking just one serving a day didn’t have any effect!

Food for Thought:

EGG Myths Debunked:

Myth: Making eggs a regular part of your diet leads to heart disease.

Fact= Eating one egg per day barely affects your risk of heart disease, while factors such as physical inactivity and obesity increase it as much as 40 percent. The American Heart Association, however, does recommend keeping cholesterol to less than 300 mg a day—so limit yourself to one to two whole eggs daily.

Myth: Egg yolks aren’t healthy.

Fact: The yellow center is a rare source of vitamin D; just one has 20 IU as well as vitamin B12 and choline, among other nutrients.  To keep cholesterol intake down, make your omelet with one whole egg to two whites.

Myth: Brown-shelled eggs are nutritionally superior to white-shelled eggs.

Fact: They’re equal.  White-shelled eggs are produced by hens with white feathers and white earlobes.  Brown shelled eggs are produced by hens with red feathers and red earlobes.  Generally, red hens are slightly larger and need more food, so their eggs typically cost more.

Over the years I've discovered that most things in life can be improved with a good spring cleaning. Your business is no different. After all, you choose to do a spring cleaning because stuff accumulates. Whether it's dust or dirt or junk mail or clutter or just "stuff" in general, it's good to take some time and get rid of it all. Then you can start fresh and clean.

Your business is the same way. Whether it's piles of old files that need to be thrown out or relationships that are no longer serving you, sometimes it's good to take stock on what's working and not working in your business, clean out what's not working so you can open up the space to more of what you DO want. And yes, this sounds sort of woo-woo, but it actually does work.So ready to get that "spring clean feeling" in your biz? Here are a few places to get started:

Environment --

1. Get rid of your stacks. File them, toss them, delegate them. Do something with them, but just get rid of them.

2. Clean out old client files. This works like a charm. The moment you clean out old client files, whether that means filing them into long-term storage or tossing them, you'll discover new clients starting to contact you. I first discovered this when I was a freelancer -- every time I wanted new clients one of the things I did (along with marketing and picking up the phone) was clean out my old client files. And it worked!

3. Get rid of the clutter in your office. Are there things that need to be mailed (for instance, books you borrowed from people and need to be returned)? Or do you have things you really need to donate? Box them up and ship them out!

Relationships --

1. Are you in relationships that are no longer serving you? Maybe you're in different places or one of you has changed and it's no longer a good fit. Be honest here. And be thorough. Look at your friends, associates, biz partners, JV or affiliate relationships, clients (yes even clients) and team members. If something isn't working (and yes, you know it's not working, your gut has probably already zeroed in the relationships you need to take a closer look at) then you probably need to move on. (Or at the very least, change the relationship.)

2. Difficult conversations. Are there some difficult conversations you've been putting off? Maybe someone owes you money or didn't live up to some other promise? Maybe they did something you don't agree with? Whatever it is, spring cleaning is a great time to get that cleaned up so you can move forward.

Habits --

1. Are there things you're either doing or not doing that you know would move you forward? Maybe you want to start exercising regularly, meditating, journaling, or just getting your ezine out each week? Or maybe you're wasting a lot of time on things that aren't serving you or moving you forward in your business? Take a look at what you're doing on a daily basis to see if that's helping you or hindering you.

None of these tasks are necessarily things you're going to enjoy, but once you do them, you'll be amazed at how good you'll feel (and how much energy it frees up for you). And don't be surprised if you start seeing a flood of things you want come pouring into your business.

“You can have big plans, but it’s the small choices that have the greatest power!”

bleachorexia: a compulsion for ever-pearlier whites, which has led Americans to spend $343 million a year on at-home-teeth-whitening kits

Did you know?

What you eat can raise—or lower—your skin cancer risk. Research shows that adults whose diets were rich in red meat, processed foods, full-fat dairy products and sweet drinks had an 83% greater risk of squamous cell carcinoma, while those who ate more fruits, veggies, whole grains, fish and low-fat dairy cut their risk by 54%.

Food for Thought:

TOP 3 FOOD GROUPS for a FLAT BELLY:

Eat good fats!  Foods containing mono- or polyunsaturated fats, such as oils, nuts, avocados and dark chocolate are less likely to be stored as belly fat than trans or saturated fats. Calories still count, however, so stick to an ounce of nuts a day and no more than 2 tablespoons of olive oil per serving.

Whole grains are waist whittlers! Eating brown rice instead of white rice can help flatten your belly. According to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, people who eat whole grains lose more weight from their abdominal areas than those who eat refined grains because whole grains create less of an insulin spike and cause less fat storage. Also, whole grains are rich in fiberhigh fiber intake is associated with a smaller waist circumference.  Fiber promotes regularity and a feeling of fullness, and it delays the absorption of sugars, fat and cholesterol.

Slim with soy! As few as 70 mg of soy isoflavones have been shown to create a reduction in belly fat. Versatile, low-cost and high-quality protein soy milk, edamamme, and tofu are all good choices!!

Slow Food is…

: an international social movement that began with an awareness of few and has cultivated in the conscience of many.  An awareness of the importance of localization and the threat  globalization has on our environment and our selves.

:filled with members and volunteers, organizations and campaigns within a public sphere where individuals fight against mass production, mass consumption, fast food and fast life

:focuses on obesity at its root: children, the quality of cultural life including access to, and appreciation of, food and wine

:and asks us as individuals to slow down and think about not only what you’re eating, but what’s in it and where it comes from.

Our food choices affect the rest of the world, realize it.

This video was tied into my final Slow Food project for Rhetoric of Social Movements at the College of Charleston. Guerrilla Cuisine is a phenomenal underground culinary program here in Charleston that supports local farmers, chefs, musicians, artists, venues, and consumers– Carlo Petrini (founder of Slow Food) would eat it up… literally
