Open Grants Push Coastal Community Foundation
over the $100 Million Grantmaking Mark

Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Georgetown, Hampton and Jasper Counties: November 9, 2010 –
Coastal Community Foundation awarded $280,000 to 42 Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester nonprofit organizations during this year’s Open Grants cycle. The awards made helped push the Foundation’s giving to over $100 million since inception.

The Open Grants program began over 20 years ago to provide support for nonprofits in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester Counties. Grants are awarded in the range of $1,000 to $10,000 throughout the arts, education, environment, health, human needs and community development fields.  A committee representing the Foundation’s Board, Donors, and broader community volunteer their time to read applications, go on site visits with staff members, participate in meetings, and make funding recommendations for the available pool of funding. These recommendations are approved by the Foundation’s Board of Directors, chaired by Dr. Stephen McLeod-Bryant.

Richard Hendry, the Vice President of Programs with twenty-five years of tenure, is an integral part of exceeding this milestone. “Our donors are our stockholders, as one of our Board members recently said.  The Foundation works hard to maximize the community returns on our donors’ philanthropic investments. Passing the $100 million mark in grants is something for them to be proud of and the community to be grateful for.”

Since 1974, the Foundation has been granting money to nonprofit organizations in the Lowcountry.  At the urging of Dr. Ted Stern and others in the Rotary Club of Charleston, the Foundation was started because of a $9,000 investment. Thanks to the visionary leadership, Coastal Community Foundation was established in order to benefit the community in perpetuity.

In 1982, Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Detyens made the first large contribution to the Foundation-$100,000- and established the Trident Academy Endowment.  In the same year, the first major scholarship fund was established in honor of J.C. Long. The Foundation’s first unrestricted grant was given in 1983 at which point 16 funds had been established, including the Waterfront Park Fund. The City of Charleston chose Coastal Community Foundation to manage the donations for the park showing the first major sign of broad community trust in the Foundation.  Today, over 560 endowment funds are managed by the Community Foundation serving donors and nonprofit organizations in eight coastal counties of South Carolina.

A sampling of this year’s Open Grants recipients:

HALOS (Helping and Lending Outreach Support) provides assistance to abused and neglected children and their care givers to help improve their lives.

Jaycee Camp Hope was established in 1969 and is a residential camp for persons with cognitive disabilities. Located on beautiful Lake Hartwell, Jaycee Camp Hope is the only camp of its kind in South Carolina. Through four summer sessions, Jaycee Camp Hope strives to give campers healthy experiences in an outdoor environment. Benefits include exercise, outdoor activities, personal growth, social development with peers and caring adults.

Jaycee Camp Hope is made possible by a partnership between Clemson University and the South Carolina Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees). The SC Junior Chamber of Commerce has provided financial support for every camper attending Jaycee Camp Hope since 1969. Campers are ages 7 and older and are grouped according to age, functional ability, and previous camp experience.

It is a unique place where individuals with disabilities can make a lifetime of memories and it offers an opportunity for parents and caregivers to have a respite from the day-to-day challenges of caring for a person with a disability. Many long-time campers start counting the days until next year as soon as they get home.

Jaycee sponsorships make it possible for many individuals to attend camp who otherwise might be financially unable to bear the costs.

Finally, Jaycee Camp Hope offers the counselors and volunteers the opportunity to learn and practice leadership skills through community service. The use of planning, training, financial management, evaluation, communications and public relations are management practices used in business environments as well as the camp setting.

VEGETABLE FISH CHOWDER

Hello my dedicated readers. I have a Special Treat for you.

Winter season has arrived and its cold weather is upon us, we often seem to turn to soups and chowders on cold, dreary days. Here is a recipe for a hearty and healthy Vegetable Fish Chowder for just such days. But you don't have to wait for a cold, dreary day. It's perfect for any day, even warm sunny ones!

VEGETABLE FISH CHOWDER

2 tbsp butter

1 med green bell pepper, chopped

1 cup thinly sliced celery

1/4 cup chopped green onion

1/8 tsp instant minced garlic

1 can (28-oz) diced tomatoes, do not drain

2 cups water

1 tsp instant chicken bouillon granules

1/4 tsp salt

1/4 tsp dried basil

1/8 tsp dried dill weed

3 drops hot pepper sauce

1 cup frozen whole-kernel corn

1 lb fresh white fish fillets about a half inch thick, cut into chunks

In a 3-quart saucepan or a Dutch oven, melt the butter. Add the bell pepper, celery, green onion, and garlic to the butter. Cook the mixture over medium heat, while stirring, until the vegetables are tender. Add the tomatoes, water, chicken bouillon, salt, basil, dill, and hot pepper sauce. Heat the mixture to boiling then reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 15 minutes. Stir in the corn. Gently stir in the fish so as not to break fish chunks apart. Cook over medium heat for about 5 to 6 minutes or until the fish flakes easily when forked.

Yield: approximately 6 to 8 servings

Enjoy!

Hello again my fans, here is another one of my opinions that I have formed over the years of watching our government in action. Frankly, it scares me to think that there is a very good possibility that this is taking place in the United States of America.

Watch the video above and think about what you have seen in this country called the United States of America. What if the U.S. government released an "educational video" to teach today's Americans how to be good citizens?

Our country is known as the country of "Freedom"! Do we want this to change?

If we don't make some serious changes in our government this could very well happen.

Please take time to think long and hard about the video after you have watched it. This could be our last chance to rise and STOP the Tyranny.

Thank you for taking time to watch the video. Leave your comments below and discuss it among yuor friends and family. I know Americans will do the right thing and Stop Tyranny Today!

Sincerely,

Jim Bonham
