In the quiet community of Awendaw, SC  Windwood farm’s 110 acre campus has been providing help, hope, & healing for at risk youth and their families for 25 years.
Windwood Farm is licensed by SCDSS to provide high management group home services to boys ages 5 to 16. Children at Windwood Farm have been removed from their homes due to physical, psychological, or sexual abuse; exposure to domestic violence; substance abuse or criminal activity in their family; or other unstable home situations. They provide long- term therapeutic residential treatment; the boys also have the opportunity to attend school on their campus. They operate 365 days a year, and while the boys are in placement, Windwood farm never closes it’s doors.

Many different individuals and either civic or church related organizations volunteer their time and talent to Windwood Farm. The farm has a number of work days scheduled throughout the year where volunteers tackle projects on their campus. They rely on this source of manpower to accomplish much of the property maintenance.  Without volunteers they could not adequately maintain the facilities nor offer as many social opportunities to the boys.  This year alone, volunteers have completed over $25,000 in sweat equity on the campus! There is a full list of volunteer oppurtunities on the Farm’s website .

Recently Windwood Farm has expanded to offer out-patients services in the community. All programs are supervised by Windwood farm’s experienced, qualified staff who receive CPR, First Aid, and non-violent crisis intervention (CPI) training, as well as ongoing training specific to the population, activities, and issues addressed.  Our employees routinely have thorough background checks through SLED, the Central Registry and the Sex Offender Registry.

Some new programs to announce are Equine Assisted Learning, community support services, behavioral intervention, &  strengthen Family Program. Get full details on each of these services on the Farm’s Website.

In 2003 Lynn Young formed the non-profit Lowcountry Orphan Relief, Inc. (LOR). LOR is a non-profit organization that brings targeted and timely aid to dramatically increasing numbers of abused, abandoned and neglected children. They are considered the first to respond when these children have been removed from their homes and placed in foster care or shelters, LOR begins the process of healing, adding dignity and hope back into demolished lives by providing basic necessities until government aid begins.

Children receive clothing, school uniforms, shoes, socks, underwear, pajamas, and winter coats as well as books, backpacks, school supplies, toiletries, and diapers.  This aid makes a great difference in their broken lives.
When asked how it is possible to do so much with so little,
Lynn says, “I keep my faith in God and stay focused on His children and I know I can never give-up. ”

From their Children’s Closet,  annual events for the children ,  and special projects for local group homes, they are dedicated to meeting the needs of abandoned, abused and neglected children in the Tri-County Area. There are so many ways Charlestonians can get involved.

Matthew Saenz , 4, and his brother Andrew, 2,  had a combined birthday party and collected items for LOR instead of receiving presents. They brought in bags of toiletries, stuffed animals and clothing for the clothing closet. Volunteers at the Children’s closet is needed as well for filling orders and sorting donations.

If you would like to be more hands on there are mentoring programs as well as special events once a year to be a part of. August 7th is 2010 Beach Day on Folly Beach and October 16th is their big Fall Festival “Make a Child Happy Day” at the Navy Yard
. Also, the Frances Lynn Young Guild is a separate fundraising arm for Lowcountry Orphan Relief, Inc. which is very hands on as well.

LOR served 2,132 children in 2009 providing them clothing, underwear, socks, shoes, toiletries, school supplies, and more. They have created 3 libraries at group homes and filled them with wonderful seating, shelving, and books for all ages. They have a v ision To build a new single-gender group home for girls on Johns Island and continue To assist existing shelters by creating on-site libraries, and purchasing items such as beds and washer/dryers for them.

Charleston is blessed to have such a wonderful group of people working so hard to supply not only physical needs but also the emotional needs and love to neglected and abandoned children.
