Seattle tops St. Louis to go into the playoffs with the first full season losing record in NFL history. The only other time that happened was in the strike shortened 1982 season. Cleveland and Detroit finished at 4-5 and for the record were knocked off in the first round of playoffs. So, what are Seattles chances of making it past the first round? How many times have you won the million dollar lottery? Pittsburgh, New England, Atlanta, and NY Jets all put huge exclamation points on their final games, each scoring over 30 points in their wins. New Orleans fumbled their way into the playoffs and Indianapolis stubbed their toe to victory. Chicago and Baltimore need more offense if they are to survive. The Packers and Eagles futures rest on the arms of Rodgers and Vick.
As I watched the Rams-Seahawks game I saw nothing that would convince me there is even a remote chance for Seattle to survive their meeting with New Orleans on Saturday at 4:30 pm. During said game I kept on hearing the words, "Its tough for a visiting team to win at Qwest Field." Well, the Saints aren't the Rams and anything short of an earthquake can save the Seahawks. If they were to beat the Saints, I will pick them to go to the Superbowl.
The Packers have something the Eagles do not, a relentless defense. The Eagles will need some help from mother nature in the way of rain to even the playing field. Vick would have the advantage on a soggy field with his ability to move and run. Sunday's weather looks to be free of any rain at 4:30 pm. Sorry Philadelphia, you might try a dance or two.
Indianapolis will be hosting the Jets on Saturday at 8:00 pm. The Colts, as of late, have not been the offensively explosive team we are use to seeing. Peyton has struggled through this season missing his compadres Clark and Collie, but has weathered the storm. Manning will be facing the tough defense of the Jets. Addai's return no doubt has given him some comfort along with the addition of old friend Dominic Rhodes. The Jets were razzling and dazzling everyone in the beginning with their last minute shockers in the form of Santonio Holmes. Well, the Jets have sinced used up their nine lives. They will need to blitz and blitz some more to keep Peyton from gaining any rythmn or else it's lights out.
Baltimore and Kansas City play on Sunday at 1:00 pm. The Chiefs were whacked by the Raiders in their last game. Not a good way to enter the playoffs against a bruising Raven defense. If Jamaal Charles gets stuffed it's going to be a long frustrating game for the Chiefs. The Ravens will try to establish a running game of their own and if they do that, it will give Flacco the edge he needs to get the job done. Cassel and Flacco are birds of a feather, so it is a tough one to call after all is said and, you will just have to wait for the done.

It was delightfully cruel to send former Panther quarterback Jake Delhomme out against his previous team. Although, the delightfully almost turned into frightfully when Jake blew a decent lead and nearly threw the game away with a costly pick that went all the way for a Panther score late in the third quarter and the lead. Jake tentively recovered in the fourth to beat his former team with the help of a Dawson field goal and a Kasay last ditch effort missed field goal.
The star of the game was not Delhomme, but Peyton Hillis. Hillis turned in another strong effort scoring all three touchdowns and grinding out 192 combined yards. He was the go to guy once again and remains the top target of Browns quarterbacks. Delhomme spread the passes around to six different receivers and threw for 245 yards. It was good to see Robiskie and Massaquoi get an increase in production as they combined for 11 catches and 102 yards. The offense threw a few surprise plays into the mix, which was good to see. One was a Hillis pass attempt that fell short of its target in the end zone. If successful, it would have been the play of the game.
Carolina played a decent game. Jonathan Stewart put in a 98 yard game. Mike Goodson ran for 55 yards and racked up another 81 yards from catches. Goodson also scored the Panthers only offensive touchdown on a 26 yard run. Clausen got beat up by the Brown's defense and still managed to make a game of it. Their defense hung in tough and had two picks. One by Captain Munnerlyn for 37 yards and a score.
The Browns are back on the winning track. Hillis continues to be the workhorse of the offense both in running and receptions. It was good to see Mangini using some imagination in the play calling. I saw a couple of plays that could have been big ground gainers if they were successfully executed. Mangini should continue to throw in the surprises. It was also good to see the wide receivers more involved. Still, the long ball is lacking and to be a legitimate offensive threat you must have in your possession the potential for quick strick capability. Joshua Cribbs was back retrieving kicks and punts, but was missing in the overall offensive scheme where he needs to be and possibly that potential quick strike. A team will not make it to the playoffs on running alone. Miami is next on the list.

(ARA) - When your son ends up on the bottom of the pile chasing down a fumbled football, or your daughter and her teammate jointly perform sideways dives to keep the volleyball from hitting the floor, you probably catch your breath, hoping no one gets hurt.
And usually, the players involved pick themselves up off the ground, brush the dust off their hands, and the game continues.
But concussions, when sudden trauma causes damages to the brain, are a common injury to the head in contact sports, and an estimated 3 million sports-related concussions happen every year in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And, when it comes to the leading causes of traumatic brain injury for young people, ages 15 to 24 years, contact sports come in second only to motor vehicle accidents.
"While the majority of concussions are self-limited, meaning the body will heal itself, catastrophic events can occur and we do not yet know the long-term effects of multiple concussions," says Dr. Jeffrey Kutcher, chair of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Sports Neurology Section. The AAN recently drafted a new position statement targeting policymakers with authority over determining policy procedures for when an athlete suffers from concussion while participating in sports.
The AAN's position statement offers help for parents, coaches, administrators and sports team health officials at all levels - from elementary school through professional leagues:
* If the athlete is suspected of suffering a concussion, the athlete should not be allowed to return to play until he or she is seen by a physician with training in the evaluation and management of sports concussions.
* An athlete should not play if he or she is still experiencing symptoms from a concussion.
* A certified athletic trainer should be present at all sporting events, including practices, where athletes are at risk for concussion.
"We need to make sure coaches, trainers and especially parents, are properly educated about how serious concussions can be, and that the right steps have been taken before an athlete returns to the field," Kutcher says.
If your athlete suffers a concussion, make sure he or she receives medical attention as soon as possible. Treatment should be taken to ensure there is proper oxygen supply, blood flow is moderated and blood pressure controlled. Other precautions can include X-rays of the skull and neck areas, or even a CT scan.
If the concussion is very severe, rehabilitation involving physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy is an option, as well as psychiatric help and social support.

It is a well known fact that staying active helps keep you looking and feeling young. Not many activities come close to the effect surfing has on the mind, body and spirit. According to experienced surfers, the special bond the surfer has with their surf board and the open ocean is almost impossible to explain.
Fresh Air
Fresh air does a body good! Surfers all over the world enjoy lots of cool, refreshing fresh air and sunshine. No matter if you're surfing a remote location or something closer to the city, the ocean air smells fresh and clean. Out on the surf, there's virtually no smog. When you are on the waves, it's just you, the water and the fresh air.
Stress Free
Out in the swells, you can let your stress and every-day worries float away with the tide. Out there, it's just you, the breeze, your board and the water. No one yelling for help or that report you should have handed in already. When you're out there, you're surrounded by total peace and relaxation. The only sounds are the sounds of the wind lightly kissing your skin and water slapping against your surfboard.
According to the majority of surfers, this type of relaxation is hard to come by anywhere else in the world. Just a few hours of surfing a week can help release the tension that builds up at home or in the workplace.
Muscle Tone
Surfing and swimming go hand in hand and are great exercise. Swimming works muscle groups you don't always think to work at the gym. Sometimes even seasoned athletes will complain of muscle fatigue after swimming simply because of the different muscles being used.
People who surf are generally slender and well muscled toned into their 60's and even 70's. Surfing is a non-impact sport, meaning it's very easy on your knees and other joints. After all, you don't jog or jump on your surf board!
Cardiovascular Health
Surfing provides an amazing aerobic workout that not only helps burn fat but also keeps your heart, lungs and entire cardiovascular system in tip-top shape. A healthy cardiovascular system keeps your immune system healthy as well as maintaining a high level of stamina, to keep you feeling young.
Fun in the Sun
Surfers love the sunshine for a wide variety of reasons. Besides giving surfers great tans to keep that youthful glow, the sun provides vitamins that maintain healthy skin and nails. Healthy bones, skin, hair and nails assist in a more youthful appearance.
Other Advantages
Aside from the previously mentioned advantages of surfing, avid surfers understand they have to eat well and exercise. Many surfers enjoy going to the gym and practicing some type of Yoga. Yoga helps keep the surfer's muscles toned and flexible and their mind alert. Many people who practice yoga taut it as a vehicle to peace and serenity in their mental well being.
If you're looking to stay young and feel young, but don't currently know how to surf and would like to learn, there is a wide variety of surf camps available. Women's surf camps cater to the needs of women. Since they are only available to women, ladies of all shapes, sizes and ages can enjoy being themselves and learning to surf. You will also develop friendships and enjoy the fellowship of like-minded people from all over the world.
While some surf camps offer only women's surf camps, there are camps that offer co-ed surf camps as well. They are a great way to learn to surf or learn a new skill or hobby while relaxing in the sun. Imagine returning to normal life, not only totally relaxed with a great tan, but also with pictures of you hanging ten, surfing like a pro and most importantly feeling and looking young.
Some say surfing keeps you young at heart. Seasoned surfers know surfing also helps keep them physically fit, looking and feeling much younger than their birth date declares.

Today I had a small window of opportunity to pick up a few groceries before I had to pick my son up at school…what does this have to do with NASCAR?, you may be asking. Stay with me and listen to my precious RACE FAN encounter today!
I was zooming through the isles of the store hearing the clock ticking in my mind, when I rounded the corner. Who knew I would have an encounter with the coolest lady. She was in one of those drivable grocery carts and she was stopped. This lady was dressed to the hilt. Fur vest over a coral turtle neck sweater, hair in a very fashionable bun and make up on to perfection. I was taken back by her presence. As I was about to go by her, she pressed her GO button and the next thing I knew we were side by side. I jokingly said to her “you wanna race”? And much to my surprise she said “Maybe I do”!!! I laughed and said she could probably take me with all the groceries I had in my cart!! She said “I like that NASCAR racing, do you?” and I told her that I was a HUGE race fan. She asked me who my driver was that I “pulled for”…In the moment, I was chuckling to myself thinking this lady is pulling my leg, right?! I said, “Carl Edwards is my man. Isn’t he a cutie pie”? “He does the back flip, right?” was her reply. She told me she “pulled for” Tony Stewart. The lady knew her stuff and I was impressed! At that moment, I realized I have stumbled across a jewel in Harris Teeter!!!! She proceeded to tell me she had already watched the race twice since Sunday…”that’s how big of a fan I am” she said.
Now that I am reflecting on this and realizing I am in Charleston SC, I wonder does her family have a place in NASCAR history or maybe they are linked to NACAR now? Kyle and Patty Petty have a home on Isle of Palms, which is only a few minutes from where I had met her. Steve Burns has a place there, too. Who else lives down here in the Charleston area that has roots in NASCAR??? My mind is still spinning!!! She told me her husband had raced at Bristol back in the 50’s~ when Bristol was still dirt!!! Her whole family loves racing and I am sure there was more to find out, but I had to go pick up my 3yr old baby boy from pre school. When she said, “yes, my baby is 57 now” that gave me a small peek into her age…but she followed up with “but I adopted her when she was already 24!” This lady had spunk!!!!!! I told her what a pleasure it was to meet her and that I had a blog about NASCAR on HobnobCharleston.com and invited her to look me up sometime.
So this blog is dedicated to the precious Tony Stewart fan, that almost took me on in isle 8 in Harris Teeter, and taught me you are never to old to share your passion….especially if it is NASCAR!!!!!
The Daytona 500 this year was all and more than we were promised in all the pre season hype!
Jamie McMurray was one of the least talked about under dogs in the field. In some circles we would call him a “B” list driver. The guy who is there every week mid pack, usually caught up in a wreck he didn’t initiate. That said he is a guy with a HUGE heart and so much passion to win. When you think about Cinderella stories this will go down as one of my favorites.
Think about it, he didn’t even know if he would be driving this year when Jack Rousch had to down size to 4 teams according to NASCAR’s new multi car rules. I sat and watched him cry his eyes out in front of Millions of people on national TV and thought to myself….that’s what its all about. The guy genuinely was thankful for Earnhardt/ Ganassi taking a chance on him and whether he wins 10 more races, snags the championship or never makes the top 10 again all year….He has a title that all drivers desire and want, the coveted Daytona 500. No one can EVER take that away from him!
And, just for the record, look back a few blogs ago…I picked him as one of the Top 5 hotties for the season!!!!
Junior Nation- Your man has arrived and is back in the hunt! If he and Lance McGrew gel and make strides to follow in the foot steps of his team mates at Hendrick Motorsports this year he is gonna be on fire! I heard Klye Petty say something this weekend that I thought was a great piece of advice…let the guy have some time to enjoy racing and bond with his team. Its so true. Junior lives in a fishbowl because of who he is and where he came from. The guy has got to find his way. I’m pulling for you, Junior! Your dad was an awesome man…but you my friend are your OWN man…go prove that to the world!
What did you think about the multiple attempts at a GREEN, WHITE, CHECKERD??? Honestly, I have heard a lot of different opinions. The drivers hate it because there are so many more opportunities for wrecking but for TV and the fans who spend the money to see a race finish under green…I love it!!
Give me some feed back! I would love to know your thoughts on the 2010 race season.
Check me out at www.HobnobCharleston.com . I am listed under sports and then NASCAR! Or just search Race Chick (become a member to comment ).
Or feel free to send me a friend request on Facebook…I’m under Race Chick! Look forward to hearing from ya!
The 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada is just around the corner. For those who haven’t been keeping up on all the winter sports since the last Olympics, here’s a top ten list (in no particular order) of the possible highlights. Just remember, it isn’t just the sports that make the Olympics worth watching!
1.The opening ceremonies
No matter who you are, or where the Olympics are located, deep in your heart you know there’s nothing more stirring than the opening ceremonies. China’s summer extravaganza set the bar pretty high for Canada, but you can bet your back bacon they’re going to put their all into it.
2.Women’s hockey
1998 saw the debut of women’s hockey at the Olympics. Since then, there hasn’t been much excitement about it in the US. But this year, Team USA is a front-runner for gold. Canada has been dominating this season, but coach Mark Johnson has high hopes for his team. Can Olympic gold do for women’s hockey what it did for women’s soccer? It’s doubtful there will be a “Brandy Chastain moment” with all that gear, but perhaps the men out there will take notice anyway.
3. Biathlon
Hugely popular in Europe but largely ignored in the US, biathletes have struggled to get funding and training until this year. When the sport was finally noticed by a prosperous contributor money was finally available to get things going. The big standout for the US will be Tim Burke, who won both silver and bronze medals at the World Cup in Ostersund. This could be a great beginning for an under appreciated sport.
4.Stephen Colbert
When Deutsche Bank went belly-up and their $300,000 pledge for the US speed skating team went with it, Colbert stepped up to the plate. It took less than a month for the “Colbert Nation” to replace the funds. There’s sure to be a lot of Colbert’s scathing satire surrounding the games. Like him or not, the comedian has the audience and the pull to make things happen.
5.T eam USA-1 four-man bobsled
Steve Holcomb has been piloting the “Night Train” with his teammates Justin Olsen, Steve Mesler and Curt Tomasevicz with incredible results. Three gold medals in World Cup events this season puts them at the top of their game. It’s even more amazing when you consider Holcomb nearly quit bobsledding because of eye problems. Surgery in 2008 restored his vision and renewed his love of the sport.
6. Skier/snowboarder antics
Though Bode Miller recently sprained his ankle, he’ll probably still make the games. And you can be sure he and the other downhill skiers will be as crazy as ever. Add in the new addition of extreme sports inspired skicross to the mix and you’ve got a recipe for a speed-induced adrenaline rush madness that only the boys and girls who haunt the slopes can produce. If only we could all be there for the after-party.
7. Shani Davis and Apolo Ohno
On December 11th, Davis broke his own world record for the 1500m by coming in at 1:41.04, besting his previous record of 1:41.80. In long track, Davis is hands-down the man to beat. Ohno, who at 27 is the elder statesman of the short track, is competing in his third Olympics in 2010. He’ll be pushing to beat Eric Heiden’s record of seven medals won in winter Olympics. But he’d better watch out, JR Celski is a young man moving up in the ranks, and one of the few who could give Ohno a run for his money.
8. Kim Yu-Na
The South Korean figure skater is the undeniable favorite for gold in 2010. Her signature triple-triple exhibits an intense athleticism coupled with a grace that brings audiences to their feet. At Skate America in Lake Placid, NY she broke the scoring record for short program, earning a 76.28. While the Olympics brings out the patriot in most of us, sometimes you just need to sit back and appreciate poetry in motion.
9. Ice Dancing
The possibilities are wide open for ice dancing this year. While US couple Meryl Davis and Charlie White won gold at the Grand Prix Final, it by no means places them above the rest of the competitors. Two favored teams missed this season making it difficult to judge who will come out on top in 2010. Everyone is sure to be giving it their all in Vancouver. It will be exciting to watch the heavy competition among the couples.
10. Skeleton
After a 54-year absence, skeleton returned to the winter Olympics in 2002 and included both men and women. Named because the new metal sled used in 1892 looked like a skeleton; it’s tough to deny the thrills caused by people sliding head first down a track at 80 mph. Look for the return of Noelle Pikus-Pace, the first US woman to win the World Cup in 2005. She’s back from taking the 2007-2008 seasons off to have a child, but is shaping up to be a big threat in Vancouver.
Canada is putting its best foot forward to make this a great winter Olympics. Take the time to watch a variety of sports. You never know, you could become the newest curling fanatic, or find out you really enjoy moguls over downhill. Bundle up, grab a hot toddy, and enjoy the best athletes the world has to offer in winter sports.

It is time to make the final pick of the NFL season. The scene is Miami, the place-Sun Life Stadium, the event-Superbowl XLIV, the opponents-Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints. Whodat you say? Yah, that's right, and unless your living under a tree in a remote jungle I'm not informing you about something you don't already know. Not alot can be said about tomorrow's game that hasn't already been said. The statistical configurations have all been calculated and the comparisons have been assessed. What's left now neither calculators nor stat sheets can measure. All that matters is what comes from inside, gives this happening breath and life, causes the pulse to quicken and the adrenalin to flow. The thing that causes individuals to reach beyond their physical boundaries and fly.
Peyton Manning possesses it. All you need to do is observe Manning in action. His demeanor, his expressions all exude this thing I am talking about. When he approaches the line of scrimmage after breaking the huddle you can see the determination in his body language as he reads the defense. As a commander he makes the necessary adjustments and positions his troops. There is no hesitation once he is set and without pause zeros in on his target. You know how things are going because you see it in his face. You see the disappointment when he fails to execute a third down, the dissatisfaction when the offense settles for a field goal, and when in a dog fight the complete focus on matching blow for blow until an edge can be exploited. When on the sidelines waiting for his next shot, the wheels continue to turn in his mind, never breaking his concentration.
Drew Brees possesses it. Brees has quietly gone about his business for years now and finally, deservedly reached the goal. He has piled up the yardage and has one of the best pass completion percentages of quarterbacks. His presence on the field inspires his teammates and the fans. When things break down on the line and the pressure is felt, his determination to find an open receiver is relentless and more times than not he will find that one receiver. His exibits the quiet, patient kind of reflection as he sits on the sidelines waiting his turn with the ball, kind of like a cat waiting and at the right moment springing into action onto its prey.
The Indianapolis Colts have already been to the Superbowl, so their fans know what they want to see. This is the first time for the New Orleans Saints and their fans emotions equal their expectations. Based on that perspective, I would give the edge to the Saints, but that won't be enough. Peyton Manning is a proven winner with a heart to match. Drew Brees is an equal in many ways. It is a tough call. I give the edge to Peyton Manning in that he is a consistent winner, always has been, and will be considered in the books and in hearts one of the best quarterbacks to have played the game.

Superbowl XLIV is nearly upon us. There are high hopes it will be an entertaining Superbowl. Whether it will match last years down to the last minute, edge of your seat excitement remains to be seen. This years opponents, the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints with their high octane offenses, have that potential. It is the Saints first trip to the big event, for Manning and company it is old hat.
Peyton Manning is a dying breed of quarterbacks. He is the quarterback's quarterback whose sole job is to manage the offense, hand the ball off when planned, and drop back to methodically pick the opposing teams secondary apart by pre-arranged schemes, but at the same time be capable of improvising while dodging 300 pound-plus missiles when it becomes necessary. He is part of a group of quarterbacks who can be compared to the dinosaurs, an extinct creature who has seen its day, but fascinates us when we see them brought to life in the movies through our modern technology. The future of quarterbacks is in transition. This year we saw more teams utilize the running back in the quarterback position with the option to run or pass, but you don't see any of those teams in the Superbowl do you. This Sunday you will be watching a living dinosaur at the apex of his supremacy.
That being said, Manning has a great supporting cast. He has a line that is not equaled by any other. Manning is the most protected quarterback in the game. The Colts offensive line have done their duty well in protecting the most valuable asset on the field and without complaint. When a game is done and victory is in hand do the cameras and microphones hurry over to congragulate them and ask them about the defining moments of the game? Do they get to bask in the glory and receive the accolades? Perhaps, that is the way they prefer it, a group of men who go about their business unpretentiously.
Manning also has a core of receivers perfectly matched to his talents. Dallas Clark is a bulldog who punishes a secondary after the catch and also possesses the finesse to find the open spot where a pass can be dropped into. The name Peyton Manning cannot be spoken without Reggie Wayne being in there somewhere. They have been a tandem for a long time and are like a well rehearsed, perfectly blended symphony. Garcon and Collie are the newest kids on the block. They have gotten a fair share of the 33 touchdowns Manning has thrown this year. Joseph Addai had only 3 reception touchdowns, but all successful offenses are complimented by a good running attack and Addai supplies that necessary element.
Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts are made for the Superbowl. They have proven their worthiness to participate in the finale of the 2010 NFL football season with a 14-2 record and two playoff games won. The question now remains whether the New Orleans Saints defense will be up to the task of facing off with one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL.

So here we go… I am The Race Chick~ love me or hate me what you see is what you get!
